How Does a Plastic Injection Molding Machine Work?

Did you know that your computer, your remote control for your TV, and even a cup of water you’re drinking out of we’re probably made with an injection molding machine?

The injection molding machine was invented in the 19 century and is one of the most popular methods for creating certain plastics and complex parts.

But how does it work? How can a machine create various shapes ranging from your computer to the dashboard of your car? Keep reading to learn more about how the molding machine works!

What Is Injection Molding?

Odds are you’ve probably heard of this term, but may not know what it is. Injection molding is the process of using plastic to create and manufacture a wide range of items. It is one of the most popular early used processes to produce complex parts.

The molding machine uses custom-made molds in order to meet the specifications of different items.

How Does It Work?

Simply put, an injection molding machine has three different parts. These are the feed hopper, the screw, and the heated barrel. When the machine starts working, it takes the plastic powder granules and turns them into a shape.

The shape is created based on the requirements in dimensions put into the machine.

Once it is in the right shape, the screw uses friction to heat the heated barrel. This is where the shape is completely molded at the correct temperature. Once this happens, it is injected into the mold cavity.

The object will take its shape inside the mold cavity as it cools.

Applications of Plastic Injection Molding Machine

Knowing what injection molding is and how it works is one thing, but knowing the application of a molding machine is completely another thing.

So what is it used for?

Injection molding is popular in the food and beverage industry. Injection molding allows for BPA-free and non-toxic plastics to be used in these instances. It is also a low cost of production for the industry, so it is great for creating beverage caps, food containers, and water bottles.

In addition to the food and beverage industry, medicine is another application. Medical companies are able to produce tools and parts cheaper with this process.

The construction industry also utilizes the use of molding machines to create complex plastic parts that are used in the construction of houses and other structures.

Oh, and the computer you are using right now is just another example of what a molding machine may have made.
